My Island Police State #1
I’ve been noting a number of things in the last week that are making this place look more and more like it’s in the throes of becoming a police state.
This case just makes me feel like burning out a few flags and posting them in prominent places around town. Did anyone see the billboard against the train bridge at the end of Hoddle Street, to the right of the Terminus Hotel. I couldn’t believe it stayed up for so long. There’s also those two in Richmond near the rail bridge in Elizabeth St.
Now that Coke are hijacking the whole stencilling culture, perhaps it’s time to change medium for underground activism.
This month, the Trocadero Art Space in Footscray curated an exhibition called Proudly Unaustralian. You can see the neighbourhood in the photo above. A work by Azlan McLennan has been nailed on a billboard outside the first floor window. It shows a burnt Australian flag, in which the union flag has been excised and the constellation retained.
I’ve just come across David Tiley’s site today – from a link at Miss Fits space. It’s so nice to know I’m not the only one here…
